Formally called the Basilica of San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo Mission, this authentically restored Spanish mission was established by Saint Junípero Serrain in 1770 and moved to its current location on Rio Road in 1771. History

At the time of its inception in 1770, the Basilica of San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo Mission was the second mission founded in California. After moving to Rio Road, it served as the mission headquarters until 1883, when the Mexican government discontinued religious use of the buildings. In 1886, the building was purchased by the Diocese of Monterey and has since been consistently used as a Catholic parish in Carmel-By-The-Sea. Tourists from around the world travel to the Carmel Mission and its church every year, making it one of the most popular pilgrimage sites in the country.

Programs

Visitors to the Carmel Mission will find much to see and do, including four historical museum galleries that showcase the restoration of the mission, the history of the prominent Munras family, relevant art exhibits, and interactive displays. Mass at the mission is offered to the public on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. In addition, couples planning a Roman Catholic wedding ceremony can opt to marry at the mission.

The Carmel Mission also features several historic sites and artifacts, including the final resting place of Saint Junípero Serra, the Founding Father of California, as well as his personal reliquary cross, the Caravaca Cross. Mission visitors can also view the Our Lady of Bethlehem Statue, brought to Carmel-By-The-Sea by Saint Junípero Serra, and explore a collection of colonial-era books in the first library of California.

Location and Directions

The Carmel Mission is located at 3080 Rio Road in Carmel-By-The-Sea, California. From the Inn, drive south on Casanova Street and turn left at 8th Avenue. Turn right on Junipero Street, which becomes Rio Road after a half-mile. Turn right on Lasuen Drive to access mission parking and facilities.

Visiting the Mission

Mission visitors can enjoy both docent-guided and self-guided tours. Admission is currently $9.50 for adults, $7.00 for seniors, $5.00 for children seven and up, and free for children six years old and younger. All fees fund the mission's restoration. The mission and its museum store are open Monday through Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., except on certain holidays.
