Carmel-by-the-Sea is known as a top destination for restaurants, art galleries, unique shops, fascinating museums, and a world-class aquarium, but it's perhaps even more famous for its natural beauty. The miles of stunning coastline and expanses of green space in Monterey County have been inspiring visitors and locals alike for centuries.
One of the best ways to get up close and personal with nature in Carmel is to go for a hike on one of the many trails to be found nearby. To get you started, here are five family-friendly hiking spots in Carmel that have something to offer to hikers of all skill levels.
Point Lobos State Natural Reserve
Once you have visited the Point Lobos State Natural Reserve, you'll understand why it is known as the "crown jewel" of California's state park system. Home to some of the area's best hiking trails, this gigantic natural reserve can be found just south of town, only a short 12-minute drive from Carmel Green Lantern Inn.
The reserve is free and open to the public year-round.
We recommend trying the Point Lobos Loop trail during your next visit. This moderate-difficulty hiking path takes you around the perimeter of the park, giving you plenty of opportunities to take in stunning views of the Pacific Ocean and catch glimpses of more than 250 species of wildlife.
Keep in mind that while dogs are not allowed on this trail, there are still plenty of dog-friendly activities to do in Carmel, including some of the other hiking trails on this list.
Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail
The Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail is unusual among Monterey County's many hiking trails: It's paved, and it also runs past several of the area's more urban attractions, including the Monterey Bay Aquarium, Old Fisherman's Wharf, and Cannery Row.
Regardless, this 18-mile trail between Castroville and Pacific Grove still offers walkers and bikers some of the best natural views of Monterey Bay. Because it's paved and mostly flat, the Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation trail is perfect for hikers of all ages and skill levels.
This scenic trail is also a great place to encounter some of the ocean's many species of wildlife. Birds, otters, seals, and sea lions can be found along the walk, and if you're lucky, you may even spot a whale out in the water.
Carmel Beach City Park Trail
If you are visiting Carmel with the whole family, chances are you've already done your research about all the great beaches the area has to offer. One of our favorites, the mile-long Carmel Beach, is only a short walk from Carmel Green Lantern Inn.
In addition to its gorgeous views of the Pebble Beach Golf Course and the Point Lobos State Reserve, Carmel Beach is also home to the City Park Trail, an easy 1.4-mile path that only takes about half an hour to complete.
This trail is open year-round and delightful to visit during any season. It's also dog-friendly and quite popular with local pet owners, so feel free to bring your leashed pup along for the hike.
Garland Ranch Regional Park
Carmel Valley's Garland Ranch Regional Park is made up of nearly 4,500 acres of breathtaking natural beauty. Locals and visitors alike return to Garland Ranch because there's simply so much room to explore and new trails to discover. There are hiking opportunities for visitors of all abilities and skill levels, from virtually level trails for new hikers to steeper paths for more advanced hikers.
On your next visit to Garland Ranch Regional Park, we suggest checking out some of its most beloved natural features and attractions, including the Carmel River, the Garzas Creek, and the park's beautiful redwood canyons and waterfalls.
The park is only a 20-minute drive from Carmel Green Lantern Inn.
Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park
The Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park is named for a much-respected local rancher and Big Sur pioneer of the late 18th century and early 20th century. The park is home to several hiking trails, including the more easygoing half-mile trek to the beautiful and legendary McWay Falls, as well as a slightly longer 1.5-mile trail to the secluded and serene Partington Cove.
The farthest away on our list, this public state park is about an hour south of Carmel Green Lantern Inn as you head there on the scenic Highway 1.
